Will petroleum jelly prevent diaper rashes?

My son has pretty sensitive skin and sometimes wakes up with some redness.I am wondering if I put petroleum jelly on him before bed( and or when I change him around midnight) if it will prevent any redness in the morning.I use good baby powder on him as well.
