These girls put vaseline (petroluem jelly) over their faces!?

these two girls who are kinda like Friends bring a tub of vaseline (petroleum jelly) to school and smear it all over their necks and faces, also they oil their hair so much and make it in to a tight bun, they look kinda ugly, i told them this causes spots i think it does, and they just reply saying it makes their skin feel soft! is this really bad for their skin?
