HELP! how to get hair wax out of your hair?

Being the total idiot that I am, I put Mane n Tail natural conditioner in my hair thinking it was deep conditioner. Turns out, it was some sort of styling wax. It's got the consistency of petroleum jelly and I tried many times to wash it off with shampoo. My hair is prone to falling, so I don't really know what to do! HELPPPPPP.
